An Afternoon in Arlington With Your Best Friend

Warm weather is finally here. And your dog is tired of sitting at home alone watching Animal Planet. What better way to shed the winter blues than to hit the streets of Arlington with your favorite furry friend?

So leash up and head over to Courthouse. Let your dog experience the high life at a.k.a. spot, which The Bark magazine named "the Ralph Lauren of pet boutiques" in its Summer 2005 issue. From fashionable carriers to colorful collars to darling doggie dishes, there's sure to be something inside to delight both you and your pet.

Are you hungry? How about stopping for lunch outdoors at one of Clarendon's many dog-friendly restaurants? The smells alone at Whitlow’s on Wilson turn you into Pavlov's dog. Sink your, ahem, canines into one of the best burgers in town while you sit in the patio area and people-and-pet watch in one of Arlington's most eclectic and diverse neighborhoods.

Once had ample time to digest, why not head over to the nearby Clarendon Dog Park? It'll give you a chance to show off your fantastic new doggie purchases to all the other envious owners while your pup enjoys running off some of those extra winter calories. This isn't an official Arlington County "Community Canine Area", but it's still a good idea to look over all the County rules and regulations beforehand, just to make sure everyone stays safe and happy.

Want to wrap up the afternoon with a late-afternoon snack? At this point your dog is probably too pooped to walk anyways, so hop in the car. Call ahead to The Lost Dog Café and they’ll have your carryout order ready and waiting at the counter. This gourmet pizza deli, in addition to serving some of the absolute best sandwiches in Arlington, has rescued, sponsored, and placed hundreds of abandoned and unwanted animals over the past 15 years through its Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation. And you’ll love the décor – in addition to many small portraits of saved and rescued dogs, the cafe displays many large, colorful, whimsical dog-themed murals.

Alright. You’ve tortured Spot enough by eating your sandwich right in front of his hanging-out tongue. Head over to Dogma Bakery in the Lee Harrison Shopping Center! It's a doggie paradise! With ice cream and all sorts of fresh-baked treats (and a great assortment of unique non-edible goodies, too), your pooch is sure to think you're the greatest thing since, well, Animal Planet.

Please call ahead to confirm hours and dog-friendliness.
